In the beginning of the year, we were lucky enough to welcome three talented and inspiring young women onto our team as interns. Unfortunately for us, they’ve now left to go back to their studies in the U.S., but we still fondly remember them and all they did for us and our startups.

Before they left, we asked them a few questions about their experience at GTEC – here’s what they had to say:

Michelle Gurevich, University of Michigan – Studying Honors Mathematics & Art History

  • Why did you choose Berlin / GTEC?
I love how international Berlin is. It is such an exciting mix of business, culture, and innovation, all of which make it an incredible place to live and work. GTEC embodies these same qualities, and it is no wonder it is centered in a city as dynamic as Berlin.

  • How has it been working with the startups and the GTEC team?
Working with the startups has been an experience unlike any other. It is so refreshing to see people eager to work on the problems they have identified, to invest all their time and efforts into transforming their goals into a reality, their present challenges a lasting success. When I first got to GTEC, I met with a few of the startup members for coffee and we discussed what inspired them to begin their business and the challenges they faced. These meetings were one of my favorite parts of working at GTEC, because I saw how passionate the startup founders were about their work.

  • What was your favorite part about working at GTEC?
GTEC gave me the opportunity to apply my studies in mathematics and business to multiple company frameworks by working closely with the startups. Whether it was implementing algorithms for EEG data signal analysis or finding optimal sorting and ranking algorithms for search queries, interning at GTEC allowed me to find the intersection of my academic interests with real-world problems, and to develop the requisite skill sets to transform those problems into solutions. But the people were my favorite part. It’s quite rare to get along so well with your coworkers and to have them treat you like part of the team after only a few weeks of working somewhere. GTEC is full of innovators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of their industries, meaning I not only learn from the best, but work with the best, too. I got to come to work every day in a room full of vibrant people who were eager to put my skills to good use and teach me all there is to know about entrepreneurship and startups.

Saffron Huang, Harvard University – Studying Applied Mathematics

  • Why did you choose Berlin / GTEC?
I chose Berlin because of its booming startup ecosystem, vibrant lifestyle, low cost of living and proximity to other interesting European countries. Also, I’m learning Deutsch so of course I wanted to be here (although English is everywhere in this city…). And because I wanted to surround myself with interesting startups, in a small company and get a great overview into the startup ecosystem here, I came to GTEC!

  • How has it been working with the startups and the GTEC team?
The startups are doing such varied and innovative things with technology, and it’s been an insightful experience to learn about their projects and challenges. Literally everyone is completely different from each other — people have come from all over Europe to be here, have wildly varying backgrounds, and their startups are at different stages of development, which lets me better visualize how startups progress.Oh man, I’m going to miss the GTEC core team! They’re such funny and vibrant people. We have a cute little community going on here, and coming to work is always a blast. I will especially miss Nala, the cutest office dog ever <3

  • What was your favorite part about working at GTEC?
It’s given me a lot of insight into what drives startups and how much persistence and grit is required. My favorite part was Maria’s baking, for sure 😉

Lauren Nennecker, Eastern Washington University. Studying Business Management

  • Why did you choose Berlin / GTEC?
I chose Berlin and GTEC because I wanted to get a better feel of the international business world and the startup scene and Berlin is the best place to do that!

  • How has it been working with the startups and the GTEC team?
It has been really interesting being in the startup scene in general, but seeing the startups we have in-house and having a close relationship with them has been amazing and has helped me expand my knowledge of the startup scene – they are all so diverse and different from one another. Working with GTEC core team was also so insightful because everyone has worked in the startup scene prior to working at GTEC so it was cool to hear about everyone’s prior experiences and how they ended up at GTEC.

  • What was your favorite part about working at GTEC?
My experience at GTEC was amazing, I have learned so many things I would have never learned at my university and have gained so many new skills I can use in my future career. I got such a wide span of useful information that will help me moving forward for my grad program. My favorite part of working for GTEC was getting to experience and learn from every different department and being able to go so in-depth into learning about topics I had never even heard of before. Being able to research all of the startups was interesting and it opened my mind to a huge entrepreneurial field that is going to grow immensely in the future. I also really liked being able to talk to and get to know the startups we have – I loved learning about what their insights were into the Berlin startup scene.

Thank you, Saffron, Michelle and Lauren – you’ll always be part of the GTEC fam <3
